The clients desired a flexible space for a home office, guest suite, and entertaining.They also wanted a better connection to the backyard and pool, along with showering and changing facilities to serve the pool. What they needed was an extremely FLEXible space, able to serve many purposes.
The project required a radical reconfiguration of the ground floor to serve as a home office by day and a family/media/guest space nights and weekends. The newly opened ground floor spills out of the big new aluminum sliders into the backyard, which was reworked around the existing pool. A new second floor deck of steel grating is supported by the cantilevered steel beam that replaced a ground floor wall. Sliding plywood panels and curtains allow the typically free flowing interior to be compartmentalized to suit various circumstances. Walls clad in rotary-cut fir plywood with “t-nuts” on a flexible 6″ grid support adjustable custom steel desks and shelves. A peg board ceiling floated over foam dampens the sound from speakers and instruments. Lastly, the new “wetroom” serves as a guest bathroom and as a changing room for the pool. With every surface covered in waterproof, durable milestone veneer, this room is extra hard working and flexible.
